Problem

Humans rely on energy for everything we do.  We use it to cook, clean, light up our homes, fuel our cars, and everything in between. This problem is almost as bad as how much we depend on our smartphones, but on a greater scale.  The thing is, were relying on the wrong type of energy.  Fossil fuels are nonrenewable energy sources, which means that they can't be replenished.  They also release a ton of CO2 emissions that contribute to global warming.  Whereas renewable energy is able to be constantly and infintely used because it never runs out, like Sun, wind, and water energy.

Looking at the graph to the right, Hawaii uses petroleum (oil) the most and then the second most used is coal.  Both of these are nonrenewable energy sources and are extremely harmful to the environment because of the chemicals it emits.  It is also difficult to transport it because we live on one of the most remote islands in the world.  When it takes so much more energy and is more harmful to use nonrenewable energy, renewable energy is still being used considerably less.

Our focus right now is on biomass.  It's the 3rd most generated energy source in Hawaii which is a good thing.  But petroleum is being generated 10x more than all renewables.  We need to change this and increase the amount of energy generation from biomass and decrease the amount of energy used from petroleum and coal.  Our laziness and conveninence has made us forget that the environment is still important.  It's still possible to correct the damage we have done and reverse the wrongs.
